The HI Content and Extent of Low Surface Brightness Galaxies – Could LSB Galaxies be Responsible for Damped Ly - α Absorption ?

چکیده

Low surface brightness galaxies, those galaxies with a central surface brightness at least one magnitude fainter than the night sky, are often not included in discussions of extragalactic gas at z < 0.1. In this paper we review many of the properties of low surface brightness galaxies, including recent studies which indicate low surface brightness systems may contribute far more to the local HI luminosity function than previously thought. Additionally, we use the known (HI) gas properties of low surface brightness galaxies to consider their possible contribution to nearby damped Lyman-α absorbers.

On the origin of Damped Lyman–α systems: a case for LSB galaxies?

We use a model of galaxy disk formation to explore the metallicities, dust content, and neutral-gas mass density of damped Lyman-α (DLyα) absorbers. We find that the [Zn/H] abundance measurements of DLyα systems now available can be reproduced either by a population of low surface brightness (LSB) galaxies forming at redshifts z > 3, whose chemical contents evolve slowly with time and whose sta...

THE CONTRIBUTION OF HI-RICH GALAXIES TO THE DAMPED Ly-α ABSORBER

We present a study of the expected properties of the low redshift damped Ly-α absorber population determined from a sample of HI-selected galaxies in the local universe. We use measurements of the number density and HI cross-section of galaxies to show that the total HI cross-section at column densities sufficient to produce damped Ly-α absorption is consistent with no evolution of the absorber...

Star Formation in Massive Low Surface Brightness Galaxies

Massive low surface brightness galaxies have disk central surface brightnesses at least one magnitude fainter than the night sky, but total magnitudes and masses that show they are among the largest galaxies known. Like all low surface brightness (LSB) galaxies, massive LSB galaxies are often in the midst of star formation yet their stellar light has remained diffuse, raising the question of ho...

Damped Lyman-α absorption from a nearby Low Surface Brightness galaxy1,2

Ground-based & HST images of the nearby galaxy SBS 1543+593 (z = 0.009) show it to be a Low Surface Brightness (LSB) galaxy with a central surface brightness of μB(0) = 23.2 mag arcsec−2 and scale length 0.9 h−1 kpc, values typical for the local LSB galaxy population. The galaxy lies directly in front of the QSO HS 1543+5921 (z = 0.807); an HST STIS spectrum of the quasar reveals a damped Lyα (...

cm H I emission from the Damped Lyman - α absorber SBS 1543 + 593

We detect 21-cm emission from the Low Surface Brightness (LSB) galaxy SBS 1543+593, which gives rise to a Damped-Lyα (DLyα) absorption line in the spectrum of the background QSO HS 1543+5921 (ze = 0.807). We obtain an accurate measure of the velocity of the H I gas in the LSB galaxy, v = 2868 km s, and derive a mass of MH I = 1.3× 10 9 M⊙. We compare MH I with limits obtained towards two other ...
